Background
Most folks don't realize it, but a Contra Dance is one of the lowest-paying gigs a band can do. Why do they do it? Ask a musician. Over and over I have had musicians tell me how much they love playing for dances. Making more money at a concert is nice, but the audience is passive and sedentary. Playing for dancers, a dynamic audience that interprets the music, creates a unique energy.
In order to promote their bands and make a little extra money, many musicians produce CD's to sell at dances. There is a wealth of Contra Dance music on CD, but you can't just go down to your local music store and buy it. In fact, it is even hard find Contra Dance CD's on the Web. I know, I have searched for Contra Dance music on the Web, and other than an occasional CD on a band's website, my shopping experiences have been dissappointing.
Contracopia was created to make it easy to find contra dance music. We have been collecting CDs from bands everywhere, and our collection is growing steadily. If you don't find something you like, bookmark our home page and check back, we update the site once a month. You can also sign up for ContraNews, a monthly email newsletter that has schedules for musicians you hear on Contracopia, and new CD's added to the site.
About CyberYankee
Contracopia is independently owned and operated. Somehow I have gotten into the habit of saying "we" when referring to Contracopia, and I think people envision an office with smart young tech folks banging away at computers and talking on headset telephones. Well, it ain't like that. My name is Patrick, and I do business under the name of CyberYankee. I operate CyberYankee from the back room of my apartment here in northern Vermont. I run Contracopia, manage five contra dance web sites, publish three email newsletters (ContraVT for contra dance information in northern Vermont, ContraNews for national info, and a newsletter for our local currency, Burlington Bread), Organize and call contra dances, design web sites for local businesses, paint and roof houses, and whatever else it takes to pay the bills. I am a recovering Engineer and hold an MBA from the University of Wisconsin, if you are curious.
| So back to this "we" thing... in the simplest sense, "we" means myself and my cat, Margaret, who is always here while I work. Here is a picture of Margaret. In the broader sense, "we" refers to myself and all the great folks whose CDs I sell. All of the musicians I deal with have been encouraging, and without their support I probably would not have gotten this far. |
